Why should you be a teacher?

I always knew that I wanted to attend college.  The harder decision was deciding what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.  When I was younger the answer was clear.  I was going to be a teacher.  Both of my parents were teachers and I spent my free time playing school with my little sister.  But as a got older I started to consider other possibilities.  Ideas of being a pediatrician or a physical therapist came to mind and I struggled for months trying to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up.  After creating a list of the pros and cons of all the careers I was considering I decided to stick with my childhood dream and pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Intervention Specialist at the University of Mount Union. There are many benefits to being an elementary school teacher.  This website includes an article about one teacher’s views on the top ten benefits of being a teacher.  The reasons she mentions were also some of the pros for being a teacher that I had on my chart.  However, I believe that the number one reason to be a teacher is that it is extremely rewarding.  Seeing a child struggle and then all of a sudden seeing that light bulb come on above their head is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have.  Elementary school students love their teachers and really look up to them for guidance and support.  It is for this reason alone that I chose to become a teacher.
